Following an immensely successful 2016/17 season, Psappha
returns with a programme as diverse and interesting as the organisation itself.
The 2017/18 season will give thirteen works their debut and will
premiere in the UK two prominent US contemporary works. There is a fantastic focus
on the music of female composers and connections with film, art and photography
in a multidisciplinary frenzy.
On the 14th of November, Psappha will
join forces with the BBC Philharmonic as part of the New Music North West
Festival across the city, including works from music students still in
education and up-and-coming big names.
In a direct step to engage audiences
with new music, Psappha will launch a new series of pre-concert talks and film
portraits, entitled Psappha:
De-Mystifying New Music. The first of this series will precede the Wonderland concert on the 17th
of November, in which Barrie Gavin’s documentary on composer Brian Elias will
be shown for ticket holders.
Launching on the 26th of October at Halle St.
Peters, the season opens with a concert of U.S. composers and music that
focuses around the human condition and the art that we create.
The UK premiere of Molly Joyce’s Rave will open the evening, a study of virtuosity, followed by an
exploration into the dying world of Brooklyn’s industrial past with Anna Clyde’s
Steelworks.
The titular work and
second UK premiere of the evening, Sarah Kirkland Snyder’s Penelope, tells the story of the Odyssey from the viewpoint of a
veteran’s wife, as they together delve into the terrors of war through an
ancient text.
Tickets will range from £6.50 - £17.50, including early bird
and student discounts.

Preceding each concert will be a more detailed preview, and, when possible, there will be a review of each concert of the fascinating 2017/18 season. For now, please find below the complete programme for 2017/18.
